High School Athletics COVID Reminder
August 17, 2021
Dear Gig Harbor High School Student Athletes and Families,
With fall sports starting tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 18 (football), and Monday, Aug. 23 (all other fall sports), we need to communicate an important message about COVID safety protocols to keep all student-athletes safe and provide maximum opportunities for participation in our fall athletics programs.
We are asking you to partner with us as we intend to keep our athletes safe and ultimately allow all of our fall contests to continue as scheduled. We ask that you share this information with your child:
-Any student athlete (s) who tests positive within 10 days before the start of practice and is required to isolate (per DOH guidelines), should not attend practice;
-Any unvaccinated student athlete who has been determined to be a close contact of a person infected with COVID should also not attend practice during the quarantine period; and -Any student athlete who has symptoms of COVID (fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea) should not attend practice.
Student athletes who may have been exposed to COVID but are vaccinated and are not experiencing symptoms may attend practice.
Student athletes will not be penalized when it comes to team selection and/or cuts for missing practices while observing quarantine. Programs that require tryouts will postpone team cuts until a later date to allow everyone the same opportunity to participate. As always, we will observe WIAA standards for participation and game readiness.
Please help us by observing these safety measures. It is critical that you take care of yourselves, as well as those on your team, so that student safety, scheduled contests and overall seasons are not jeopardized.
Sincerely,
Bob Werner
